The landmark civil rights case, Mendez v. Westminster, paved the way for school desegregation in California.

ORANGE COUNTY—Today, Assemblyman Tri Ta announced that AB 1805, his bill to include the historic Mendez et al v Westminster School District of Orange County et al case in the school social science curriculum, has passed the Legislature and is awaiting action by Governor Newsom.

“I am so honored to work with Sylvia Mendez and her family to bring this historic case to the forefront by ensuring California students learn her courageous story,” said Assemblyman Tri Ta.  “The fight for civil rights in our schools took place right here in Orange County.  Sharing the legacy of Sylvia Mendez and the other families will help inspire generations about the importance of human dignity, civil rights, and the fight for justice,” concluded Ta.

Sandra Mendez Duran and Sylvia Mendez say, “We are so happy this bill has passed the Legislature so that students throughout California can learn about the struggle for equality and the power of education.  Our sincere thanks to Assemblyman Ta, Senator Umberg, and all of the legislators that supported this bill.  This bill inspires us to continue to share our story and how students can learn from our shared history.”
