ORANGE COUNTY, CA— Assemblyman Tri Ta announced today that Governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 88 into law, a bill that ensures that dependents of active duty service members are eligible for CalGrants and the Middle-Class Scholarship Program.
When an active duty member of the military is deployed to serve outside the state, they still maintain California as their state of residence. Sometimes, the service member may take their family with them. If the service member has a child that is in his or her senior year of high school, they would be ineligible for the CalGrant and Middle-Class Scholarship Programs due to spending a portion of the year outside the state in spite of the California residency. AB 88 corrects this discrepancy by allowing children of active-duty service members to be eligible for these programs.
“I am proud that Governor Newsom signed AB 88 into law,” said Assemblyman Ta. “This bill ensures that those who have served will not be punished for their service. I want to thank my legislative colleagues, especially Senator Seyarto, for helping this bill become law.”
