Sacramento Elitists Block Legislation to Protect Consumers from High Energy Prices
ORANGE COUNTY—Today, Assemblyman Tri Ta condemned the Assembly Appropriations Committee for effectively killing Assembly Bill 1710, which would cap electricity rate increases to the rate of inflation.
“I introduced a solution that would provide California families and businesses much needed relief from unaffordable utility bills. I am extremely disappointed that my colleagues have decided not to protect consumers from out-of-control prices,” said Assemblyman Ta. AB 1710 had previously passed out of the Assembly Utilities and Energy Committee with strong bipartisan support.
Assemblyman Ta continued, “It’s exceptionally frustrating to watch Sacramento politicians waste money constantly, but refuse to enact common-sense consumer protections while we are seeing some of the steepest rate hikes of our time. I remain proud of the work I did on this critical legislation. While today’s decision is not the result I wanted, I will continue to fight against skyrocketing rates and for the constituents of the 70th Assembly District.”
Over the last ten years, California’s electrical corporations have consistently increased rates without regard to the rate of inflation. Experts project that electricity bills will only increase further this decade, inflicting more pain on California families.
